Ghost jobs in 2026: how many postings are real?

The 30-second ghost check
Before you spend an hour tailoring an application, spend thirty seconds on this. One miss is noise; two or more together means skip it or verify first.

Check the posting date. Older than 30 days with no repost-and-close cycle is a warning; a fresh posting under two weeks old is the single best sign of a live role.

Find it on the company’s own careers page. If the role isn’t listed where the company controls, treat the aggregator copy as unconfirmed.

Look for a salary range. Where the law requires one and the posting still doesn’t have it, someone isn’t trying very hard to fill it.

Look for specifics: a named team, a real manager, concrete responsibilities. Ghost postings read like templates because they are.

Search the company’s posting history. The same role reposted every quarter, forever, is a pipeline net — not a seat.
